Sources include this handwritten family tree of some age, in a copy of the book Essays on Natural History, by Charles Waterton, edited by Norman Moore, published by Frederick Warne & Co., London, 1871.

The information is not only incomplete but is also largely unverified and so should be treated with caution.

The story of the Watertons after they left Walton Hall is largely outside the scope of this website, which is concerned principally with the Squire and his home village of Walton.

The great, great, great grandson of the Squire (and thus the great, great grandson of Edmund) lives in Australia, his son, James is the last of the line. This extract is from a public message published in the guestbook* of UK Villages (ukvillages.co.uk):

Comment I found J S Sargent's web site about Walton (West Yorkshire) and Charles Waterton.

I am the great great great grandson of Charles Waterton, the Naturalist of Walton Hall, and I enjoyed the Walton website very much. Thank you (even though the site implies I don't exist!) Although I was born in England, I am now living in Perth, Western Australia and my son James is the last of the male line descended from Charles Waterton the naturalist (although as you say, the senior male line dies out many centuries ago).

Thank you again. I have book marked the Walton/Waterton site and will watch its development with interest.

Best regards

Charles Waterton
